November Message from Principal Thomas DiLeo
Dear Upper Nyack Elementary School Families,
As the crisp air of November fills our days and the beauty of the changing season surrounds us, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to belong to such a vibrant and dedicated community. November is a special month for reflection, celebration, and learning—bringing together two meaningful occasions: Native American Heritage Month and the spirit of gratitude as we approach Thanksgiving.
This month, our school will honor Native American Heritage Month by learning about the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native Americans. Our librarian is incorporating stories, art, music, and history into lessons that will help students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for Indigenous peoples' enduring impact on our country. Our 4th grade staff will also be doing work to teach students about the historical context related to the interactions between indigenous peoples and European settlers.
As we reflect on gratitude, I am personally filled with appreciation for the students, teachers, families, and staff that make UNES such a special place. Every day, I have the privilege of witnessing the hard work, curiosity, and kindness of our students as they tackle new topics and challenge themselves to grow. Whether they are mastering math, reading new books, exploring science experiments, or learning about the world beyond our classroom walls, our students inspire us with their efforts and determination.
November is also a time to express thanks for the people around us. I encourage families to take a moment this month to reflect on the things that bring them joy and gratitude—whether it's a family meal, a kind word from a friend, or the excitement of learning something new. Our students' growth is a testament to the power of small, daily actions—both inside and outside the classroom—and I am honored to see their progress firsthand.
November also provides us time to reflect and think about our Veterans. On Veterans Day, we honor and express our deepest gratitude to all the brave individuals who have served in our nation's armed forces. Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication have protected our freedoms and shaped the history of our country. Thank you to all veterans for your unwavering service and sacrifice.
Thank you for being such an integral part of our school community. Your involvement and support make a world of difference, and I am truly grateful to work alongside you as we support the growth and success of every child.
Wishing you a joyful November filled with gratitude, learning, and connection.
Sincerely,
Mr. DiLeo
